The orthopedics department of Union Hospital, affiliated to Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology was widely famous as “one of two flags” of orthopedics society of the country at the 1950’s, and was praised by Premier Zhou En-lai. Since 1984, the orthopedics department was authorized as the one of most early doctoral degree programs in China. In the 1990’s, the orthopedics department was qualified as one of the key disciplines and postdoctoral fluxion stations, and was authorized as spinal surgery center and artificial joint center of the Hubei Province. And the chiefs of orthopedics department of Stanford University, University of Heidelberg and Oxford University are invited to be professor emeritus of the orthopedics department.
　　 Currently, there are 5 professors and doctor advisors, 6 associate professors, 15 attending doctors and 6 residents serving in the orthopedics department. Most of the doctors have won the doctor’s degree, and more than half of the doctors ever studied abroad. There are over 80 post-graduate students, including doctor and master candidates studying in the department. Filled with of vigor and vitality, a galaxy of talent is gathering in the department and forms perfect echelon.
　　The orthopedics department provides more than 240 patient beds. It is consist of the Joint Division, the Spine Surgery Division, the Pediatric Orthopedics division, the Bone Tumor Division, the Arthroscopy-Sports Division and the Division of Orthopedic Trauma. Scale and diagnostic-therapeutic level of the orthopedics department occupies the leading position within the Hubei province, and the stands at the first level in the country. Lots of famous domestic and international specialists are working for the department, elaborately designing advanced and normative therapeutic plans, performing precise operations to obtain the best effects and the least complications. Their prominent works is deeply acknowledged and trusted by the patients.
　　 Chief of the orthopedics department, Professor Yang Shu-hua has studied in the University of Essen for 4 years, and now is the Chairman of Orthopedics Association of Hubei province. He is awarded the national government subvention. Prof. Yang mainly do research works on femoral head necrosis, scoliosis, and cervical syndrome. He has taken the charge of several research projects supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China, and has obtained many important findings and patents. Prof. Yang has extremely high attainments in bone and joint diseases.
　　 Under the leadership of Prof. Yang, the orthopedics department takes the initiative in a series of advanced operations in Hubei Province, including total ankle arthroplasty, total shoulder arthroplasty, one-stage bilateral total knee arthroplasty and one-stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty, minimally invasive arthroplasty, cervical disc replacement, lumbar disc replacement, minimally invasive surgery for cervical syndrome and lumbar disc herniation, thoracoscopic surgery for idiopathic scoliosis and arthroscopy for knee, hip, shoulder and elbow joint diseases. In the recent years, the orthopedics department is rapidly growing up to be one of the best in the country.
　　 Since the 1980’s of last century, the orthopedics department has been in charge of tens of projects of national, provincial or ministry level and association projects. Since the 1990’s, the orthopedics department has obtained 9 patents, 15 approved scientific research achievements, including 5 the international level achievements, and edited 10 large professional book. And since the year 2000, the orthopedics department has published over 2000 academic papers.
     The orthopedics department is equipped with world classic surgical apparatus, like the only one microscope for spine surgery and the only one navigation system for orthopedic operation of mid-south of China, which numerously improves safety and therapeutic effects of spine and joint operations. After the recent use of the new surgical building of Union Hospital, the international level environment and equipments of the building strongly supports the orthopedics department to carry out over 6000 operations smoothly per year.
     The strong technique strength of the orthopedics departments attracts a lot of famous professors for exchange activities, like lecture and demonstrative operations. Such activities rapidly help the orthopedics department gear to international orthopedics levels. Meanwhile, the first artificial joint center in China set up by German B. Braun Institute sites in the Union Hospital, which helps the orthopedics department remain synchronized to the world classic surgical techniques, entity and equipments.
